At the start of the tour I asked my followers/readers on social media for their suggestions across York, Glasgow, Newcastle and Manchester and we visited the places they suggested. thanks guys!
After trips to York and Glasgow, this family hopped on the train and headed to Newcastle for fun in the sun. Yes, you read that right, SUN! Our whole trip was scorching to be honest and there’s nothing lovelier than a stay-cay when the sun’s out to play, right?!
A friendly, bustling and truly beaut of a city offering both the lively metropolis and lush green countryside with its famous Jesmond Dene area, Newcastle is one of my most favourite cities in the UK.
With the sun on full beam, strolling by the Tyne bridge reminded me of Sydney Harbour Bridge in Oz. It’s that glorious!
A cafe-culture lifestyle in full swing, this is the ideal city to visit in the summer either with kids, friends or as a couple for a mini romantic break. Hint, hint Peter. Let’s leave the kids at home next time!!!
What to do:
The Dino Jaws exhibition at the Centre for life museum has travelled from the natural history museum in London to Newcastle and features the most ah-mazing life-like animatronic dinosaur heads you ever did see, and a T-Rex that wowed the kids (and scared me)!
On until January 8th, make sure you make a visit, and with lots of science-based exhibitions, Planetarium shows and hands-on activities at the you’ll be entertained all day.
Jesmond Dene Park is well worth a visit, taking you around twenty minutes to get there from the city centre.
Tranquil and picturesque you can ride through the park in style on Thomas the tank engine before inspecting out the animals and birds in Pet’s Corner-Alexander, 4 never wanted to leave. Be prepared for requests for bunnies for weeks after!
Simply delightful.
Where to Eat:
From the minute you leave the train station, you’ll be spoilt for choice with restaurants on every street. We had a stroll around the city, making a beeline for the Fat Hippo Underground, a place that was recommended by lots of my readers as a family-fave.
Fat Hippo serves the best burgers in (Newcastle) town and visiting the Underground venue saw us delve deep into the cellar for giant tasty burgers (Peter plumped for a veggie number), nachos and tasty sweet potato fries. All the yummy feels.
Hello waffles and cookie dough pie for afters (it would be rude not to, right?)!
For dinner it was all about Nancy’s Bordello, a quirky joint in the student area of the city, providing a cool venue for people from all walks of life to come together, eat, drink and even dance if they fancied.
We enjoyed a mixed drink and joining students, elderly people and young couples in love. relaxed with cool beats (not too loud either), opt for a halloumi salad, giant jacket potato, veggie pizza and refreshing Mojito to wash it all down with. Yummy!
The divine peace and Loaf for Sunday lunch did not disappoint either. A hit with the critics, it felt like we were eating Michelin style fare and their roast beef with all the trimming was the best I’ve ever eaten.
Peter the pescatarian plumped for tasty Dover Sole with Sea Vegetables and Elderflower Hollandaise!
Roast beef and Yorkshire puddings the size of your head get this Leeds-living mama’s seal of approval.
Hello abstract works of art, I mean desserts – chocolate Ganche with Tonka bean ice cream, and Buttermilk ice cream with rhubarb sorbet and meringue.
Family-friendly, warm, inviting and chic interiors satisfies tasty British food for a meal to remember.
